Objective of the Program

The Graduate Course in Visual Arts of the Communications and Arts School of the University of São Paulo is aimed at producing and fomenting research in the field of Visual Arts endeavoring to guarantee the necessary interface between theory and practice; to consolidate the emergence of a creative and reflexive axis; and to train qualified artists and teachers.

Academic Major: Visual Poetics

Academic major that favours forms of operation in art projects and processes. It develops around two lines of research, which are:

  • Research Line: Creative Processes in Visual Arts

Projects and execution of works in visual arts, with emphasis on poetics; development of both theoretic and experimental research on artistic processes.

  • Research Line: Multi-means

Development of works of art and research that associate diverse means through hybridization processes; projects and research that involve digital means and artistic creations.

The work realized for these research lines is both practical and theoretic and should encompass the principal aspects of each.  

Academic Major: Art Theory, Teaching and Learning

The academic major “Art Theory, Teaching and Learning” develops studies and research projects in theory, history and criticism of art and the fundamentals of the artistic learning process, aimed at a greater comprehension of the artistic phenomena in production, perception and diffusion.

  • Research Line: Art History, Criticism and Theory

The Art History, Criticism and Theory research line studies the work of art  in its particularities and in its relation with the general context of the practices and ideas in which in it was constituted. It is thus based on the analysis of  works of art, on the study of critical contributions and on thought in diverse other fields of knowledge. The research line encompasses: historical, critical and theoretical investigations about modern and contemporary  art and the discourse of art criticism, from the 18th century to today; with special attention given to artistic production, art criticism and all the other instances of the local art system and its particularities.

  • Research Line: Fundamentals in Teaching and Learning Art

This research line concentrates on the study of content, methodology and philosophical principles that underlie art education in grade schools and in institutes of higher learning, although not restricted to school environments, but also in other institutions connected with artistic practices and experiences such as Museums, Cultural Centers and other entities which foment experimental practices.
Its main objective is to furnish instruments with which to better reflect about artistic practices, the aesthetical canons and pedagogical activities used by art teachers, and to stimulate research on artistic learning components and the processes through which artistic knowledge is constructed by children, teenagers and adults.
